The Caucasus anti-persona 2013

The leader of the LDPR Vladimir Zhirinovsky’s statements on the Caucasian constituents of the federation reached their heights in autumn 2013. In late October he publicly urged the state to separate the North Caucasus by barbed wire and to bring the birthrate in the NCFD under control. This provoked a wide response and was heavily criticized in the North Caucasus. "Who ever heard of such a thing that a head of one of leading political parties dares speak antihuman mottos, insults and humiliates nations? In any democratic country such deeds would lead to a very strict response from society. In America they would not only dismiss him from the Congress, but also sentence him to prison,” Chechen social activists said.

Alexander Boroda, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, had to comment on the problem as well: "We do not support the statement by Zhirinovsky, which he made on the program of Vladimir Solovyov, that it is necessary to limit the birthrate in the Caucasus or to enclose the Caucasus with barbed wire. It certainly is fundamentally at odds with all the basic provisions of the Russian Constitution and generally with universal values. Therefore, we absolutely cannot and will never support Zhirinovsky. We are against trying to pedal the Jewish origin of some of Zhirinovsky’s relatives, which, thankfully, is not related to his activities, either social and political. When people try to pedal that Zhirinovsky has Jewish roots and put the focus on this, we are categorically against it. Because it's not a strike at Zhirinovsky but an attempt to ignite some kind of ethnic hatred in particular between the Russian and Jewish populations, saying that it is not Zhirinovsky with all his odious statements and extremism but the Jewish community proposing such schemes. We disagree with this. Zhirinovsky has never represented the Jewish community and has never been related to the Jewish community by any special ties except for socio-political activity which is associated with all citizens and communities.”

According to Boroda, Jewish communities "have repeatedly expressed our support for Islamic and spiritual leaders in the Caucasus, we have repeatedly expressed our condolences when tragic incidents occurred in relation to the imams of mosques, when muftis were killed. We made joint statements on strengthening the protection of mosques, combating extremism, anti-Islamic extremism, strange as it may sound, in the Caucasus, i.e. when some radical groups were struggling against "soft" Islam and killing these imams.”

Boroda said that he wants to meet with the leadership of Chechnya: "We have historically good relations with them, and the head of the Chechen Republic and his inner circle are smart and politically correct people who understand the value and importance of each word in the community. So I hope that we can remove this stress and dot all the "i"s - what Zhirinovsky said, what the Jewish community said.”

As a result President Putin had to criticize Zhirinovsky publicly: "We have a stable electorate which has established itself during 20 years, and I think there is no need to address a certain part of our electorate to improve your own positions to the disadvantage of the fundamental interests of our country.”
