World press on elections in Azerbaijan (May 14, 2013)

Die Presse published an article headlined 'Aserbaidschans Staatschef will Wahlbeobachter zulassen' (Azerbaijani leader wants to invite observers). The author notes that, even though the meeting between the Azerbaijani and Austrian presidents was very warm, the public discussed the persecutions of Ilham Aliyev's opponents highlighted recently by Amnesty International.

"Protest demonstrations are being broken up, the regime's opponents are being sent to prison and opposition leaders, including those who wanted to run for president, are under arrest," the article reads.

The two presidents discussed the situation surrounding democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan and even sign an agreement concerning the rule of law in the country. The Azerbaijani leader said that he invited international observers to monitor the coming presidential elections.

Azerbaijan and Austria have common economic interests, the author of the article notes. Austria pays special attention to the Nabucco project and wants to be one of the Nabucco transit countries.
