Dagestani hopes for national presidential polls
Dagestani acting President Ramazan Abdulatipov was interviewed by Vladimir Pozner on Channel One. Abdilatipov expressed hope that the population would have presidential polls to elect its leader next time. Such elections will be organized after governmental reshuffles, he added.
The official noted that the republic saw numerous cases of corruption and banditism in the government. He said that he favored the national presidential polls, because he had been elected to the Russian parliament four times.
Abdulatipov pointed out that 64% of the Dagestani government had been replaced and believes that there are still many more functionaries to be dismissed. The acting president said that his predecessors had failed to adapt to the governmental environment.
Commenting on the arrest of Makhachkala Mayor Sayid Amirov, Abdulatipov said that he had had no conflict with the mayor for three months of work. But the process coincided with the reshuffle.
Abdulatipov said that he was planning to announce amnesty for militants that gave up. He praised the letter of journalist Marina Ahmedova, where she proposed the amnesty.
