Baku Freezes Mexico Investment Projects

Azerbaijan says it is putting on hold plans to invest in projects in Mexico.

Azerbaijan's ambassador to Mexico, Ilgar Mukhtarov, said on November 7 that Baku was taking the action because of Mexico's decision earlier this year to remove a statue of Azerbaijan's late leader Heydar Aliyev.

Authorities in the Mexican capital said it removed the statue after activists complained it honored a man known for authoritarian rule and human rights abuses.

Azerbaijan had paid $5 million to beautify the park where Aliyev's statue was erected.

City officials carted the statue of the former Communist Party boss off to storage in January.

Reports say Azerbaijan has been considering investment projects in Mexico worth about $3.8 billion, some in the energy sector.
