Dinara Yunus: “Stay of my parents in custody is a matter of life and death”

The daughter of the arrested human rights activists Leyla and Arif Yunus, Dinara Yunus living in the Netherlands expresses concern for the health of her parents.

"I am very concerned about the physical and psychological pressure on my mother in the Kurdakhani jail. She is regularly attacked by a criminal woman contained with her. Moreover, the officer of the prison, designed to enforce the law, brutally beat my mother suffering from diabetes.

A man who raises a hand against a woman and pulls her hair cannot be called a man. In this case, the officer is not punished and my mother is given a reprimand. I am very concerned for the health and safety of my mother," said Dinara Yunus in an interview with the Voice of America.

On the request of the Yunus family to BP with an appeal to protect the rights of the arrested spouses Dinara said that the company thinks only of its own economic interests.

"I think that BP is strong enough to raise the issue of political prisoners in Azerbaijan. BP must demand the immediate release of political prisoners, and my parents.

Money earned by BP in Azerbaijan is stained with blood, torture and suffering such freedom-loving people as my parents," said Yunus.

Dinara noted that her parents suffer because they protected human rights and political prisoners and exposed the lies of the authorities.

Dinara feels free and safe in the Netherlands and wants her parents to feel the same.

"I want them to live a quiet life, without stress. I think it is time for them to finally think about themselves," continued Yunus.

"Western countries apply quiet diplomacy, but it does not work. My mother's condition is getting worse. She has repeatedly been subjected to humiliation and insults. I believe that the court will extend the arrest of my parents. I ask the United States and Western countries to openly call on the government of Azerbaijan to immediately release my parents.

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution which called for the release of my parents. The Western states must demand the government of Azerbaijan respect the resolution and act in compliance with its obligations in the field of human rights, which Azerbaijan has never observed," said Yunus.

On the question whether Dinara Yunus wants departure of her parents from Azerbaijan after the liberation, she replied: "I cannot speak for my parents. It will be their choice. They are no longer young, they are around 60.

My father suffers from heartaches and blood pressure and my mother suffers from diabetes and severe pains, especially after being beaten by a guard. They are in urgent need of medical care. Their stay in custody is a matter of life and death.”
