Nino Burjanadze: "Saakashvili should be on the defendants' bench"

Interview by Georgy Kalatozishvili, Tbilisi. Exclusively for Vestnik Kavkaza

Ex-Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Nino Burjanadze and her Democratic Movement-United Georgia is ranked third after the ruling Georgian Dream coalition and ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement (ENM), according to social polls at the latest presidential and municipal elections. Burjanadze's criticised the government for trying to turn the ENM into a "false opposition" and its inability to really punish the ex-president, who lives in the U.S. In an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza, Mrs. Burjanadze said that she saw mistakes, weakness and malice in the tendencies.

- Nino Anzorovna, do you really think that the current and the former government of Georgia have an unspoken agreement, are in cahoots?

- Persistent facts prove it: Georgian Dream has done everything to make Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement seem like its main opponent. The word was "seem." Because to a large extent it is no opposition, it is a criminal organization. But creating the "main opposition force" out of it, it seems, is beneficial for the current government. Any impartial person can tell you the ENM's allegedly second place at the presidential and municipal elections is a lie, it is absolutely unreal and does not fit reality. However, the cahoots and the inefficient policy of Georgian Dream allowed ENM to get such "results" and stay afloat.

- President Giorgi Margvelashvili, responding to public criticism from U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland about the "political persecution" of Saakashvili and his team, made a transparent hint that he could pardon the ex-president. What is your opinion about it?

- I think that Saakashvili should be on the defendants' bench and be penalized for what he did to the Georgian state and the Georgian people.

Concerning the ruling coalition, you need to take into account that Georgian Dream is mostly staffed with people who did not suffer too much during Saakashvili's regime. Even if they did, they feel so well in the government today that they have forgotten about the main promise - restoration of justice. It is no longer so important for them. In any case, it is not the primary goal. Who gave the right, even to the president, to pardon Saakashvili, if the Georgian people, voting for the current president and the ruling coalition, demanded them to punish Saakashvili and his clan for the crimes they committed?!

Please, recall the main slogan of Giorgi Marvelashvili in the pre-electoral period. He promised the Georgian people to end the criminal "cohabitation" between Georgian Dream and the United National Movement, that "justice will prevail." Where is the justice?!

In reality, "justice has prevailed" only for those who joined Georgian Dream. Not for all though, "justice was restored" only for a few people in Georgia. They are the authorities of Georgian Dream. The rest - who lost property, who suffered - got nothing. I will give you a clear example: people released from prisons on the decision of the parliament (Georgian Dream that is) with the status of "political prisoners of Saakashvili's regime" cannot get exoneration! In other words, they are recognized as political prisoners, their criminal records are not closed. It is impossible to imagine greater absurdity and mockery of people's dignity. People's rights are still violated and they cannot find a job. It is absolutely abnormal but it is a demonstrative illustration of the current government.
