CPJ Demands Release of Khadija Ismayilova

 

US-based Committee to Protect Journalists issued a statement in support of Khadija Ismayilova, on which a trial started in Baku Court today.

"The release of Khadija Ismailova and all other journalists would be the right solution for Azerbaijan and help to improve its international image," said the representative of the organization, Nina Ognyanova.

The statement recalled that Azerbaijan holds behind bars at least 7 journalists and bloggers. International organizations recognize them as political prisoners and demand their release. As for Khadija, she is convicted on false charges of economic crimes,

In fact, she is being persecuted for the investigation to expose corruption in the higher echelons of government and, in particular, the business of the ruling family in Azerbaijan.

On the indictment, the journalist may be sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment.
