Azerbaijan: Karabakh War veteran attempts self-immolation
On February 14, Malik Medjidov, a veteran of the Karabakh War, made an attempt of self-immolation in front of the administration of the city of Sumgait in protest against non-provision of housing to his family. Eyewitnesses of the incident prevented him from setting fire to himself; but he was hospitalized, as pouring gasoline over him triggered an allergy.
For a long time Malik Medjidov has been on the waiting list for an apartment in the house for disabled war veterans, Etimad Asadov, the head of the Public Association "Karabakh Veterans", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondents.
"Several years ago they built a house for war invalids in Sumgait. Medjidov was on the waiting list, but was not given an apartment. After that, he complained a lot, asking to solve his problem, but with no result," said Asadov.
According to his story, Medjidov's self-immolation was prevented by other veterans, who came to the city administration building with him, and the personnel of the administration.
