26 Azerbaijanis who have fought with ISIL are detained
Authorities in Azerbaijan say they have arrested 26 citizens of the Caucasus country suspected of joining militants in Syria and Pakistan. They took part in the combat units of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant", reports the Azerbaijani service of the "Radio Liberty".
According to the article those arrested are accused of involvement in illegally armed groups, trafficking of weapons and explosives, and other charges.
According to the Azerbaijani portal Minval.az, a criminal case has been filed against them and if found guilty, they will be punished by imprisonment for a term of 20 years or life imprisonment.
As reported by Iranian news agency IRNA, ISIL is gathering volunteers in Azerbaijan to participate in the fight in Syria and Iraq. According to IRNA, the restrictions on political and religious activities in Azerbaijan are one of the main reasons why ISIL considers this country as fertile ground for gathering "jihadist groupings." Azerbaijani citizens are fighting among various terrorist groups in Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to the Azerbaijani news agency "Vesti.Az", the total number of Azerbaijani terrorists in these countries amount 300. At the same time, according to the Azerbaijani media, only in Syria there are 200 Azerbaijani terrorists killed over the past three years. The media has also repeatedly reported about the elimination of commanders among the Azerbaijani terrorists.
