ECHR Began Communicating on Intigam Aliyev’s Complaint

 

The European Court of Human Rights has started communication in the case of the head of the Legal Education Society Intigam Aliyev.

The lawyer Javad Javadov told Turan the complaint will be considered as a priority.

The statement reports infringement of Aliyev’s rights on Article 3 (prohibition of torture) of the Convention on Human Rights. The Azerbaijani government has to answer the ECHR questions before May 28.

The complaint is related to the conditions of detention and deteriorating health of Aliyev during his delivery to the court.

In addition, the ECHR has previously initiated communication on another application from Aliyev - violation of rights under article 5 (liberty and security of person) of the European Convention. The government should answer the questions of the ECHR on the case until March 12.

* Intigam Aliyev was arrested on 8 August 2014 on charges of illegal business, tax evasion and abuse of office. Subsequently, he was also accused of embezzling and forgery.

Aliyev denies all charges and says they are politically motivated. Amnesty International has recognized him as a "prisoner of conscience".
