Prosecutor Offers to Sentence Mirkadyrov to 7 Years in Prison

Today at the Baku Grave Crimes Court the journalist Rauf Mirkadyrov’s trial continued, with the prosecutor holding a final speech.

During the closure, the prosecutor suggested to sentence Mirkadyrov to 7 years in prison.

The lawyer Fuad Agayev told Turan the public prosecutor in his speech asked the court to apply Article 62 providing for the appointment of a softer punishment than that envisaged by Article 274 (treason) incriminated to the journalist. This article provides for the punishment of 10 to 15 years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.

The lawyer declined to comment, noting that the defense will state its position at the end.

The next meeting is scheduled for December 23.

* The journalist denies the charges. Human rights advocates acknowledge Mirkadyrov a political prisoner.
