Milli Majlis Triggers Anti-US Bill
At today's plenary session of Milli Majlis a bill "The situation of human rights in the United States" was submitted by the non-partisan MP Rovshan Rzayev.
He asked to make a document providing for "sanctions" against US officials, congressmen and organizations for consideration by the relevant committees of Parliament. He explained his initiative as a protest against "double standards."
Parliament Speaker Oktay Asadov instructed to consider the bill in the parliamentary committees on human rights, legal policy and state building issues, international and inter-parliamentary relations.
The bill is the response of Baku on the initiative of the head of the Helsinki Commission of the US Congress Chris Smith that introduced a bill "for the act of democracy in Azerbaijan. This document provides for sanctions against the government of Azerbaijan, if human rights problems in the country are not solved.
