The Norwegian Foundation Human Rights House strongly condemned the arrest of the human rights activist Leyla Yunus and the persecution of her husband, Arif Yunus.

In a statement, the organization called the arrest part of the persecution of human rights defenders and civil society activists, which has reached "unprecedented wave of repression."

"If the charges against the Yunus couple are "confirmed", then it will be another politically motivated arrest in Azerbaijan," the statement says.

The statement authors remind us that charges of tax evasion and illegal business are similar to the charges made against the head of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Training Center, Anar Mammadli and the executive director of the Center, Bashir Suleymanli.
